Puerto Rico first lady gives governor-elect's wife tour of official residence

Puerto Rican first lady Wilma Pastrana Jimenez on Monday welcomed Beatriz Areizaga Garcia, the wife of the island's governor-elect, Ricardo Rossello, to La Fortaleza, the gubernatorial residence.

Pastrana Jimenez had invited her successor as first lady to visit the first family's residential area and the main halls in Santa Catalina Palace.

According to a statement released by the Governor's Office, the pair discussed raising their children in the executive mansion, which was designated a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1983.

The first lady explained the restoration work on the mansion carried out under the current administration not only in terms of preserving the historic site but also to increase the safety of residents, visitors and the enjoyment of La Fortaleza for all Puerto Ricans.

The meeting also allowed the incoming first lady to chat with Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla and to visit the current first lady's office, from where in recent years she has headed numerous initiatives in the Proyectos de Vida, a multidisciplinary effort to improve the quality of life for all Puerto Ricans.

Pastrana Jimenez also discussed the most important aspects of her social work with Areizaga Garcia, including promoting health and physical activity in her many visits and talks given in schools and communities across the island.

She also presented the results of her work to prevent obesity among Puerto Rican youth.

"It was an excellent opportunity to have a dialogue and exchange impressions about the priorities and needs ... on which we must continue working together for the sake of our people," Pastrana Jimenez said.

Areizaga Garcia thanked the first lady for her gesture and for the hospitality of her team during the tour.

The pair also visited the Santa Catalina chapel and some of the gardens near the mansion.

The first lady said that she was confident that the island's children, communities, heads of households and elderly will be in good hands with Areizaga Garcia helping to look out for their welfare as first lady.
