Parkland Shooting Survivor Tells Spring Breakers to Boycott Florida and Visit Puerto Rico

Following the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 14, many students have come together for press conferences and televisions appearances in the fight against gun violence. One of those prominent voices for the student-led movement is David Hogg, who has an idea for a spring break destination that can make a difference.
The high school senior pleaded that students nationwide who are planning to travel for their weeklong vacation boycott Florida, a popular spring break spot, and go elsewhere unless legislation to prevent gun violence is passed. “Let’s make a deal DO NOT come to Florida for spring break unless gun legislation is passed,” he tweeted. “These [politicians] won’t listen to us so maybe [they’ll] listen to the billion dollar tourism industry in FL. #neveragain.”
Later in the day, to make the selection easier for tourists, Hogg encouraged people to visit Puerto Rico, in light of the devastating aftermath following Hurricane Maria, which ravaged the island last September. “Better Idea: Spend your spring break in Puerto Rico,” he tweeted. “It’s a beautiful place with amazing people. They could really use the economic support that the government has failed to provide.”

The 17-year-old’s suggestion received support from San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz and fellow classmate, Emma González. “We are honored by your leadership and call to action on behalf of the people of San Juan. Don’t give up your fight. We stand with you,” wrote Yulín Cruz while González tweeted, “Follow @davidhogg111 ‘s suggestion and visit Puerto Rico, they could really use that tourism money.”
Hogg has advocated for gun laws since the moment the mass killing broke out at his high school. He huddled with his classmates inside a classroom during the shooting, and as a young journalist, he decided to pull out his phone and interview fellow students about gun violence prevention.
